How To Dry A Wet Carpet

Posted on November 25, 2022

There are many ways a carpet can get wet. Getting a carpet cleaning done by a professional Claremont cleaner is fantastic – but you’re unfortunately often left with wet carpets afterward. Or maybe something leaked and covered your carpet. Perhaps there’s been a storm, and some rainwater ended up indoors.

Whatever the case, you must let your carpet dry to prevent mold growth. If the moisture is caused by anything other than a Claremont carpet cleaning service, you also must hire a cleaning service to get the grime out.

Limit Traffic

First, limit the foot traffic on the carpet. Try not to walk on it until it’s dry. Stepping repeatedly on a wet carpet can cause the water to be pushed further into the carpet, giving it less time to dry and more time for mold to grow.

Towel

Next, towel up any excess moisture. You can use paper towels, hand towels, bathing towels, or whatever else. Find anything that can absorb moisture and apply it to your Claremont home’s carpet. You might even be able to use sponges and loofahs, as long as they’re not too wet themselves. Make sure to dab, not rub. This will prevent the contaminant from spreading.

Air Flow

Next, check the airflow in the room. See if there’s anything you can do to increase your airflow. Open some windows, turn on your heat or air conditioning, and even open doors if you have to. In a low-humidity environment, heat works better than air conditioning. With high humidity, you might want to opt for AC instead.

Fans

Grab any fans you might have lying around the house to really encourage airflow. This includes devices such as hair dryers. Anything made to blow hot or cold air onto a surface will work in this case. Keep these fans running over the carpet. Try not to place fans on the wet part of the carpet to avoid electrical problems.

Wet-Dry Vacuum

If you have a wet-dry vac somewhere in your home, it’s a terrific device to remove moisture. Wet-dry vacs are designed to pick up dry and wet materials, hence the name. This means that they’re great at drying wet carpets.

Baking Soda

Believe it or not, baking soda is actually very absorbent. It won’t completely dry your wet carpet, but it helps. Sprinkle some baking soda onto any wet parts of your carpet and let it sit for a few minutes. After around half an hour, vacuum everything back up. Your Claremont home’s carpet should be a bit better.

Check Padding

Once you’ve done everything you can to dry the carpet, you must check the padding underneath. For some, you might have to pry the corner off to do this, but this is a crucial step. If the padding is wet, leave it exposed and try all your previous efforts to dry it. After that, keep an eye on it, as it may start to grow mold.

Call A Professional

If your carpet was wet by contaminated water, call a professional cleaner to clean it up again. Even after the water has evaporated, the contaminants will still be there. You need a professional Claremont carpet cleaner to get anything harmful off your carpet.

After carefully taking these steps, your carpet is less likely to grow mold, and you’ll have a clean, dry carpet in no time.
